Włodowice (German: Waldowitz ) is a village and seat of the municipality of the same name in the powiat Zawierciański of the Silesian Voivodeship , Poland .

geography

Włodowice is located in the Kraków-Czestochowa Jura , a mountain range in southern Poland. The village is 47 km northeast of Katowice .

The city lies in a very attractive landscape. The biggest attractions are the numerous rock groups, which are also good for climbing. There is a campsite at the Rzedkowickie group. Water sports can also be practiced in the vicinity. Włodowice also offers good opportunities for fishing.

history

Włodowice has a long and eventful history. It was first mentioned in 1220 in a document from the Bishop of Cracow, Iwo Odrowaz as Wlodowycze . At that time it was one of the villages that had to pay taxes to the local government in Mstów . During the Mongol storm through Poland, Włodowice was burned down and later rebuilt. In the early 14th century a parish was founded in Włodowice. In 1327 the village became the property of King Władysław I. Ellenlang . Presumably only a few decades later, Włodowice received city ​​rights . In 1386 it came into the hands of a noble family.

In the second half of the 16th century, Włodowice became more important as one of the centers of the Protestant Reformation in southern Poland. In the Swedish-Polish War (1655-1660) the small town was burned down again.

Włodowice later belonged to Prussia. From 1815 the city was incorporated into Congress Poland . In 1870 it lost its town charter.

There is a historic church of St. Nicholas in Włodowice . The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1701 and consecrated in 1708. Its construction is attributed to the priest Marian Kepski. The church received an altar in 1787. In 1796 the church towers were restored by mason Valentine Urbanski, and the rest of the church from 1898–1911. Today the building appears in the style of the Polish Baroque . The graves of soldiers from the First and Second World Wars lie in the Roman Catholic cemetery.
