Ogrodzieniec [ ɔgrɔˈʥɛnɛʦ ] is a town with about 4400 inhabitants in Poland . It is located ten kilometers southeast of the district town of Zawiercie and belongs to the powiat Zawierciański , Silesian Voivodeship .
The city is best known for the castle ruins , which used to be the coat of arms of the Polish Society for Regional Studies. In the immediate vicinity of the city are the granite rocks of the eagle nests crowned by several castle ruins and the limestone area of the Upper Jura .
history
The first mention of Ogrodzieniec comes from 1382. It was granted town charter in 1386. In 1655 and 1702 the city and the castle were burned down by the Swedes.
In 1795 the city came to Prussia and was part of New Silesia . Between 1807 and 1815 Ogrodzieniec belonged to the Duchy of Warsaw and then to the Kingdom of Poland . In 1870 Ogrodzieniec lost its town charter.
During the German occupation in World War II, between 1939 and 1945, the place was assigned to the German district of Ilkenau in violation of international law .
In 1956 Ogrodzieniec got the status of a town-like settlement and in 1973 it got its town charter back.
