Andrzej Szewczyk (born March 16, 1950 in Szopienice , † September 29, 2001 in Cieszyn ) was a Polish painter and sculptor.

Szewczyk studied art education at the Silesian University in Cieszyn. He lived and worked for the rest of his life in the nearby village of Kaczyce Górne. In his work he strove to “neutralize painting”, which he often pursued in extensive work cycles with unusual techniques. In the 1970s, for example, he created paintings on mirrors or printed boards, including the cycle Malarstwo obrazu ujednolicone z malarstwem ściany in collaboration with Tomasz Wawak (1974).

At his first exhibition in Warsaw's Galeria Foksal , with which he had been associated since 1977, he and Malowidła z Chłopów showed works that represented the simple geometrical divisions of fishermen's houses in the village of Chłopy near Mielno on a 1: 1 scale. Under the motto of Stéphane Mallarmé , he covered the floor of the entire Galeria Foksal with colored pencils in 1981.

The cycle Pomniki listów F. Kafki do F. Bauer (1981–1984) consisted of oak blocks with holes and filled with lead. Diariusze (1981–1983) was created using a similar technique . In the installation Biblioteka - bazylika (1989), he stacked oak boards stamped with lead on a layer of salt, creating the shape of a basilica with a raised central nave and lower aisles. His exhibition To była przyszłość oceanu, a to jest twoja przeszłość also took place in the Galeria Foksal in 1989 . One of his last wood-and-lead works was Biblioteka - tydzień (1991–2000) in which tables represented the days of a week.

In the Manuskrypt alchemiczny (1981-1983), Szewczyk brought up drawings on the pages of a German-language chemical encyclopedia. In 1992 he created the series Ontografia on paper from the 1920s. In works such as Słownik (1994) he worked with books that he buried in wax or lead.

Szewzyks works have been shown in more than 30 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions and were admitted to the collection of contemporary art of the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom, which he in 2007 two exhibitions ( Andrzej Szewczyk. Prace z kolekcji sztuki współczesnej Muzeum Górnośląskiego and Andrzej Szewczyk. Malowidła for Chłopów ) dedicated.
