Suwalszczyzna

Suwalszczyzna is a region in the north of Poland located Podlaskie in the border triangle Poland-Lithuania-Belarus. The capital and eponymous place is Suwałki . The region consists largely of the Pojezierze Suwalskie .

population

Most of the Lithuanian minority in Poland lives in some villages in the border triangle. Otherwise the region is mostly inhabited by ethnic Poles.

history

The region was already on the important trade route from Kraków via Warsaw to Vilnius in the Middle Ages . It was a popular hunting ground for Polish kings and the nobility. Most of the cities and monasteries were laid out from the 16th century.

religion

Most of the residents are Roman Catholic, but there is also a small Orthodox minority.

natural reserve

The Suwalszczyzna has shares in two national parks, the Biebrza National Park and the Wigry National Park , and in two landscape parks, the Suwałki Landscape Park and the Rominter Heide Landscape Park, as well as over twenty nature reserves.
