Between Mikołajów and Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski , the line was opened in 1885 by the Ivangorod-Dombrow Railway , and between Sandomierz and Dębica on October 30, 1887 by the Galician Carl Ludwig Railway . In 1903 the section Łódź Kaliska – Łódź Chojny (–Łódź Widzew) was opened to connect the railway line Łódź – Koluszki with the 1902 opened Bednary / Łowicz – Łódź - Kalisch line. In 1915, during the First World War, the Vistula Śrzwięt Railway closed the gap Ostrowiec Sandomierz opened. The missing piece Łódź Chojny – Mikołajów was opened under German occupation in 1941.

On January 21, 1958 the section Łódź – Bedoń was electrified, in 1973 the electrified section was extended to Mikołajów, since December 31, 1974 the following section to Tomaszów Mazowiecki has been operated electrically. The short section Dębica – Dębica Towarowa has been electrified since September 26, 1963. The line between Skarżysko-Kamienna and Wąchock has been electrified since September 10, 1982, until September 16, 1987 this electrified section was extended to Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, to Sandomierz until December 22, 1987, and to Chmielów until December 15, 1989.

In 1930 the branch line to Regny (route number 44) was opened, electrified in 1983, on October 1, 1999 passenger traffic was discontinued, and in 2000 the route was de-electrified.

On December 1, 2006 the local passenger traffic Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski – Sobów was discontinued, on August 1, 2009 the passenger traffic Tomaszów Mazowiecki – Skarżysko-Kamienna was discontinued, on December 9, 2012 the traffic on the section Tomaszów Mazowiecki – Opoczno was resumed. On September 1, 2009, the Tarnobrzeg –Dębica passenger traffic was discontinued, and on December 13th, it was reactivated on the short Tarnobrzeg – Ocice section on the occasion of the reactivation of passenger traffic on the Ocice – Rzeszów railway.
