history

The history of the castle and the city of Wassenberg are closely linked. In 1020 Emperor Heinrich II gave the castle and land of Wassenberg to Gerardus von Antoing. From then on he called himself Gerhard Graf von Wassenberg and thus founded the Count's House of Wassenberg , which after four generations founded the Grafentum Geldern at Castle Wassenberg . Wassenberg Castle, however, has existed for much longer; the previous building was probably a Roman fortification. After the participation of Count Gerhard III. von Wassenberg at the crusades donated the St. George's Basilica (the ship of which was demolished after being damaged in the Second World War and replaced by a new building) and an associated monastery. In 1118, Gerhard IV. Count von Wassenberg completed the construction of the monastery and church, which was consecrated on September 30, 1118 by Bishop Otbert von Lüttich . In 1131, Jutta von Wassenberg, Gerhard's sister, married Walram von Limburg and brought Wassenberg into Limburg. Since the ancestral line of the Counts of Wassenberg now continued the Grafentum Geldern, in 1202 the son of Duke Heinrich of Limburg , who inherited the castle and land of Wassenberg, could only call himself "Lord of Wassenberg". Wassenberg received city rights as early as 1273 , which were confirmed in 1972 during the municipal reorganization.

description

Wassenberg Castle is one of only three hilltop castles on the Lower Rhine next to Kleve and Liedberg . The parts of the hill fort within the city wall that are preserved today almost all date from 1420. The four-storey square keep from the first half of the 15th century, standing on a hill sloping on all sides, is made of brick and today serves as a lookout tower with a view over the Rurtal . On the southwest side of the hill is the gate tower with a basket arched passage. A Gothic pointed arch has been preserved on the inside . The upper floor and the skylight date from the 18th century.

Wassenberg Castle has been used as a restaurant since November 15, 2018 under the name "Burg Wassenberg by Savio". The reopening of the hotel is currently being planned.
