Place name

  • 1144 Tudere
  • 1172 (de) Thudern
  • 1343 Tuderen
  • 1542 Tuddern
  • 1533 Tudderen
  • 1846 Tüddern

The place name can be derived from the Celtic word with Latinized ending * Teuto-durum , which means “people's castle” or rather “north city”, “city of the north”. The word teuto > touto meant “people, ethnic group ” ( Indo-European * teutā . See also German ) but probably had a homophone in Celtic touta- > tuta- “link”, “north”.

The well-known word duron was first “doors”, then “city [surrounded by a wall]” and possibly also forum, based on the Roman pattern (for comparison Forum Julii > Fréjus , Provence with Augustodurum > Bayeux , Normandy). Duron is mentioned in the Viennese glossary "De nominibus gallicis" as doro "ostium". In Breton and Welsh dor still means “door”.

Local history

In 150 AD, the Roman geographer Ptolemy first mentioned a place called “Theudurum” (later: “Teuderion”) on the road from Coriovallum ( Heerlen ) to Colonia Ulpia Traiana ( Xanten ). This settlement was located northwest of the medieval town on the road to Millen and was inhabited until at least the middle of the 4th century. A few remains of two early medieval burial grounds have been discovered to the northwest and southeast of today's location. The place was first mentioned in medieval written sources in 1144.

In the Middle Ages , Tüddern belonged to the Millen rule , later to the Heinsberg rule . In 1484 this fell to the Duchy of Jülich-Berg ; In 1499 Tüddern belonged to the Jülischen Amt Born , in 1709 Tüddern was part of the Jülich Amt Sittard .

In 1815 Tüddern came to Prussia . The border with the Netherlands was drawn to the west and south of the village .

Tüddern belonged to the Netherlands from April 23, 1949 to August 1, 1963 under the name Tudderen . In 1963 the place came back to Germany (see history of Selfkants ).

With the law on the reorganization of communities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the communities Havert , Hillensberg , Höngen , Millen , Süsterseel , Tüddern, Wehr (Selfkant district) and Saeffelen (district Waldfeucht) to the new, non-governmental municipality Selfkant.

The Roman Catholic parish of St. Gertrud Tüddern was mentioned in 1804 in the canton of Sittard, in 1827 in the dean's office in Heinsberg and in 1925 in the dean's office in Gangelt. From then on it was an independent parish. In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Gertrud Tüddern was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .
