Local history

Until 1282 Heilder belonged to Millen, the seat of the family of the Lords of Millen, which was incorporated into the Heinsberg rule in 1282 . In 1499, the Duke of Jülich acquired the rule of Heinsberg and Millen and became the seat of a ducal-Jülich bailiff .

From 1794 to 1815 Heilder belonged to the French canton of Sittard . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 , Heilder came to the Prussian Rhine Province .

After the end of the Second World War, the Netherlands demanded compensation for the war damage suffered in the form of a territorial claim. For this purpose, the Selfkant was placed under Dutch order management since April 23, 1949, in accordance with the final declaration of the London Germany Conference.

In the post-war years, the border with Saeffelen and thus with Germany ran within what is now Saeffelen. After the return of the area on August 1, 1963, the Selfkant area including Heilder again belongs to the Federal Republic of Germany . The barriers were dismantled and the customs control houses were converted into residential buildings. These wooden structures still exist today and are popularly known as 'Kamissebuud'. The part of the village Heilder, which lies east of the L 410, was separated around 1970 and added to the village Saeffelen. This part of Saeffelen is still popularly referred to as 'Op de Helder'.

After the Second World War, all German properties on Dutch soil were expropriated by the Dutch authorities. The German government promised a compensation payment that has not yet been paid out to private individuals (Traktatland compensation). The land owned by the church was returned a short time later.

Heilder is mentioned as Heylare in the 15th century . It is not certain whether the epithet refers to heather. The basic word -lar could mean pasture or swamp

Religions

The denomination is predominantly Catholic; Heilder is affiliated with the Saeffelen parish.

In the village of Heilder there is also a Catholic chapel , in the old part of the village (now Saeffelen) there was a Protestant church that is currently used as a residential building.

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Lucia Saeffelen was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .
