Local history
Saeffelen was first mentioned in 1136 as Safla. Safla is based on a Celtic name for the sandy soil, so the place name speaks for a settlement from the Celtic times .
Saeffelen belonged to the forest community of the great Echter bush, which, according to tradition, Pippin II had given the community of Echt . A chapel is attested from the year 1276, the old Lucia patronage suggests a great age.
Today's church, a simple brick building from 1846/49, was consecrated on May 9, 1852. Together with the rectory and the village square, it forms the center of the village. The two hamlets Dieck and Heilder belong to the parish of Saeffelen .
In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Lucia Saeffelen was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .
- Heilder is mentioned as Heylare in the 15th century. It is not certain whether the epithet refers to heather. The basic word -lar could mean pasture or swamp. Heilder has a small cath. Chapel.
- Haus Dieck, which is hidden behind extensive meadows in a stream valley, was mentioned as a dyke, ie dike, as early as the 14th century. Today it forms a courtyard area that is closed on all sides.
In the Middle Ages Saeffelen belonged to the Millen lordship, which later became the property of the Lords of Heinsberg . In 1499 the Duchy of Jülich took over the Heinsberg area. Saeffelen now belonged to the Millen office in Jülich.
In the early modern period , Saeffelen was the center of the Anabaptist movement .
On July 1, 1969, the new community Selfkant was formed from the communities Saeffelen, Havert, Hillensberg, Höngen, Millen, Süsterseel, Tüddern and Wehr. Saeffelen had previously belonged to the Waldfeucht office . The other municipalities that formed the new municipality of Selfkant had been under Dutch contract administration until July 31, 1963 and formed the Selfkant office from August 1, 1963.

According to § 3 (1) of the main statute of the Selfkant municipality, the municipality is divided into localities. Saeffelen is a locality and is represented by a local mayor in the municipal council in accordance with Section 3 (2) . Werner Joerißen is the mayor of Saeffelen. (Stand 2013)
