Local history
Wehr belonged to the Born office in Jülich . Monetary income from Wehr belonged to the founding fund of the Millen Propstei in 1144 , so that the Millen rule probably had property here . In the 14th century, several goods were defended as Heinsberg fiefdoms. The name Wehr is reminiscent of the military forces of earlier centuries. In the area between Wehr and the city of Sittard, a battle between the imperial troops and the soldiers of Duke Wilhelm V of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg took place on March 24, 1543 . Wehr had a total of 530 inhabitants in 1828 and belonged to the Selfkant district.
From April 23, 1949 to July 31, 1963, the Selfkant and thus also the Wehr were under Dutch contract management. The repatriation took place on August 1, 1963 after payment of 280 million D-Marks .
With the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the following change of area came into force on July 1, 1969.
§ 1 (1) The municipalities of Havert , Hillensberg, Höngen, Millen, Süsterseel, Tüddern, Wehr (Selfkant office) and the Saeffelen municipality (Waldfeucht office) will be merged to form a new municipal municipality. The community is given the name Selfkant.
§ 1 (2) The Office Selfkant is dissolved. The legal successor is the municipality of Selfkant.
