Local history
Großwehrhagen belonged to the Jülich office of Millen. A definite differentiation from Kleinwehrhagen is only possible from the 16th century. A court in Weirhagen has been published since 1476 as a fief the man chamber Heinsberg, a little later than other likely fief of the man chamber Millen. The place belonged to the parish of Höngen.
Großwehrhagen had a total of 149 inhabitants in 1828 and, together with Biesen, Dieck and Kleinwehrhagen, formed the municipality of Höngen, which belonged to the Selfkant district.
From April 23, 1949 to July 31, 1963, the Selfkant and thus also the municipality of Höngen with Großwehrhagen were under Dutch contract management. The repatriation took place on August 1, 1963 after payment of 280 million D-Marks .
With the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the following change of area came into force on July 1, 1969.
§ 1 (1) The municipalities of Havert, Hillensberg , Höngen , Millen , Süsterseel , Tüddern , Wehr (Selfkant office) and the Saeffelen municipality (Waldfeucht office) will be merged to form a new municipal municipality. The community is given the name Selfkant.
§ 1 (2) The Office Selfkant is dissolved. The legal successor is the municipality of Selfkant.
Church history
The parish of St. Lambertus Höngen was an independent parish with Bruch, Groß- and Kleinwehrhagen. The majority of the population consists of Catholics . Already at the turn of the millennium there was a chapel in Höngen that was under the control of the Gangelt parish. In 1227 Höngen received the right to a parish church. The present church was consecrated in 1952 after it was destroyed by the war.
There is a small chapel in the village . It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The chapel dates from 1883. Inside there is a rococo altar from an already demolished church. The only bell in this church hangs in the chapel and is still rung today, but only when someone from the village has died. If you want to see the chapel from the inside, you have to visit it on Sunday, because only then is it open all day.
In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Lambertus Höngen was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .
politics
According to § 3 (1) of the main statute of the Selfkant municipality, the municipality is divided into localities. Großwehrhagen forms a locality with Höngen and is represented by a local mayor in the municipal council according to Section 3 (2) . Ruth Deckers is the head of the village of Höngen. (Stand 2013)
