Local history

Hillensberg used to belong to the Born Office in Jülich . In a document from 1170, the village is named Hilleneseick . According to the oldest Heinsberg fiefdom register , Alard von Hillensberg was enfeoffed with two courtyards in the 14th century, probably the later Upper and Lower Courts, while Dietrich, son of Alard, carried three parts of the patronage rights to the church of St. Michael vom Heinsberg fiefdom. The row settlement should have emerged from a Fronhof association. Hillensberg had a total of 391 inhabitants in 1828. The Hillensberg community belonged to the Selfkant office.

From April 23, 1949 to July 31, 1963, Selfkant and thus Hillensberg were under Dutch order management. The repatriation took place on August 1, 1963 after payment of 280 million D-Marks .

With the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the municipalities of Havert , Hillensberg, Höngen , Millen , Süsterseel, Tüddern and Wehr (all Selfkant) and the municipality of Saeffelen (Waldfeucht ) merged to form the new, non-governmental municipality Selfkant.

Church history

The Roman Catholic parish of St. Michael Hillensberg was an independent parish .

A Christian community attests to the age of the Church of St. Michael in Hillensberg as early as the 1st millennium. Hillensberg was not officially confirmed as a parish and mother church until the 16th century. In 1801 the diocese of Aachen was established and Hillensberg was assigned to the canton of Sittard . In 1925 the Gangelt deanery was formed and the parish was assigned to it.

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Michael was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .
