Junction-related signposting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A junction-related signposting (also a junction system) helps cyclists with tour planning.

Junction sign in Belgian Limburg

The so-called Fietsrouten network was founded in 1995 in Belgian Limburg , and then quickly expanded across borders to the Netherlands and later to Germany and Wallonia .

system

In the cycle route network of an intersection system, all intersections (intersections) of cycle routes are numbered. At the junctions there are signposts to all neighboring junctions. In addition to the number of the node, the routes to neighboring nodes are shown here. The signs to a neighboring junction are labeled with its number. Usually there is also an orientation board at each junction with a map of the network system and the numbering of the junction.

The following example explains the signposting in East Belgium . The system is similar in other areas.

The advantage of the system is that cyclists only have to remember the numbers of the intersections of the planned route instead of place names. In addition, the route can be changed more easily at each junction.

The sign itself consists of 4 different types of signs:

  • The exit board is used for orientation and as a starting point for a bike tour. It contains the instructions for use and a map with the network of cycle paths.
  • The zoom map contains the same information as the exit board , with the difference that it is smaller and only contains an extract of the route map.
  • Junction signs provide information about the junction at which they are located. They indicate the numbers and directions of the neighboring points.
  • There are intermediate signposts on the route between the individual junctions to indicate changes of direction.

Flanders

The entire network of cycle routes in Belgian Limburg consists of various cycle routes that are connected to one another by junctions. All junctions are numbered and are clearly indicated at eye level on blue rectangular signs in both directions along the cycle path.

Wallonia

In East Belgium, over 850 km of cycle paths are connected with 182 nodes. 155 zoom maps, 551 intersection signs and 1497 intermediate signposts keep cycle tourists on the right course.

In the north of the network, nodes 1 and 5 are connected to points 91 and 92 from the Dutch province of Limburg . In the east there are numerous connections to the Aachen city region . Via Küchelscheid and Kalterherberg you get to point 41 in the Eifel National Park . Between Weismes-Steinbach and St. Vith , the RAVeL-Weg is integrated into the route network on the route of the disused Vennbahn , today's Vennbahnradweg . There is a connection towards Bleialf and Pronsfeld via the Steinebrück border bridge . The traffic office of the eastern cantons has also drawn up 18 themed routes with lengths of 14 to 89 km. In the far west, between junctions 73 and 74, you can drive to the famous Eau Rouge curve on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit .

Germany

The first region in Germany in which the junction system was installed was the German-Dutch region of Wurmtal. The junction system there removes border barriers for cyclists and brings people on both sides of the Wurm River closer to one another. The cities of Kerkrade , Herzogenrath , Landgraaf and Übach-Palenberg are connected to each other by this cycle path network and thus moved closer together. A total of 130 km of cycle paths with many scenic or cultural-historical attractions were connected. At various points there is also the possibility to switch to other cycle path networks.

North Rhine-Westphalia

Junction 41 in the Eifel National Park

In 2006, the district of Heinsberg was the first to introduce the system in North Rhine-Westphalia, there are 90 nodes, 25 of which are linked to the systems of the neighbors and thus facilitate seamless, cross-regional cycling (status 2015).

The junction system was also introduced across the board in the Rhineland cycling region, an association of regional authorities in the Cologne / Bonn region to promote cycling tourism. Since 2014/15 around 430 nodes have been installed in Cologne , Bonn , Leverkusen , Rhein-Kreis Neuss , Rhein-Erft-Kreis , Rhein-Sieg-Kreis , Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis and Oberbergischer Kreis , thus forming the largest interconnected network of nodes in North Rhine-Westphalia -Westphalia. In the neighboring regions there are several node systems, each with a circle. There are over 100 nodes in the Düren district . The district of Viersen has had 116 nodes since 2015. There are also junction systems in the Aachen city region , in Mönchengladbach , in the Kleve and Wesel districts since 2019 and in Bielefeld since 2020 .

As part of the " Regionale 2013 Südwestfalen", work is also underway in North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochsauerlandkreis, Märkischer Kreis, Soest, Siegen-Wittgenstein) to set up a junction system that is to be completed in 2015.

Brandenburg

Several tourism regions in the north and west of Brandenburg have introduced the junction system: Prignitz (since 2012), Barnimer Land (since 2014), Havelland (since 2016), Ruppiner Seenland (since 2016), Oberhavel (since 2017). The tourism regions do not quite correspond to the political division; the following districts are roughly covered by the junction system: Prignitz , Barnim , Havelland , Ostprignitz-Ruppin , Oberhavel .

The system is currently being set up in the Uckermark and should be available by October 2018. Such a system is also currently being set up in the Elbe-Elster district .

Netherlands

There are now intersection systems all over the Netherlands, e.g. B. in Zuid-Holland in the Hoekse Waard (south of Rotterdam ), in the Drechtsteden (cities around Dordrecht ), in the Alblasserwaard-Vijfheerenlanden (between Dordrecht, Nieuwpoort and Leerdam ), in the Krimpenerwaard (between Gouda , Schoonhoven and Rotterdam) the South Dutch island of Goeree-Overflakkee and since spring 2007 in the Midden-Delfland region (south of Delft ).
