Local history

Höngen used to belong to the Jülich office of Millen. The basic rule to Höngen came with the reign Millen to the lords of Heinsberg . According to the oldest Heinsberg fiefdom register , Gottfried von Gansweiden with the homonymous farm near Höngen was enfeoffed with land and a mill in the 14th century. The Gansweider Gut and other goods in Höngen were subordinate to the Gangelt court and were fiefs of the Mannkammer Millen since the 15th century . The tithe was owned by the Heinsberg Gangolfuss pen, which acquired it around 1404.

In 1828 Höngen had a total of 656 inhabitants. Together with Biesen, Dieck, Groß- and Kleinwehrhagen, Höngen formed the municipality of Höngen, which belonged to the Selfkant office.

From April 23, 1949 to July 31, 1963, Selfkant and thus also the municipality of Höngen were under Dutch contract management. The repatriation took place on August 1, 1963 after payment of 280 million D-Marks .

With the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the following change of area came into force on July 1, 1969.

§ 1 (2) The Office Selfkant is dissolved. The legal successor is the municipality of Selfkant.
