Schwelm district
The Schwelm district was a German district in the Arnsberg administrative district belonging to the Prussian province of Westphalia . It existed from 1887 to 1929.
Administrative history
Due to the continuous growth of the population in the Ruhr area in the 19th century, the area of the Westphalian district of Hagen i. W. as too big. Downsizing seemed necessary. Therefore, on April 1, 1887, the western part of the Hagen district was split off and merged into the new Schwelm district. The district administrator took his seat in Schwelm . The district initially comprised five offices and a total of 15 municipalities:

Langerfeld and Nachbarebreck were incorporated into the Rhenish district of Barmen on August 5, 1922 . In 1923 Mühlinghausen, Oelkinghausen and Schweflinghausen were merged to form the municipality of Milspe , which since then has also formed the Milspe office .
On August 1, 1929, the Schwelm district was dissolved. The eleven remaining communities were incorporated into the newly created Ennepe-Ruhr district .

Local constitution
The Schwelm district was divided into the municipalities of Gevelsberg and Schwelm, and also into rural communities that were combined in offices.

The district constitution was based on the district ordinance for the province of Westphalia of July 31, 1886.
