Parish and local history

The chapel belonged to the pastoral care district of the parish church of St. Andreas in Steinfeld .

In 1858 the Krekel chapel was elevated to a parish church by the Archbishop of Cologne Johannes Cardinal von Geissel . The new parish church of St. Barbara was built according to plans by the architects Willy Weyres (who later became master builder in Cologne) and Hans P. Fischer (both Cologne). The first groundbreaking was on February 4, 1930, the foundation stone was laid on June 15, 1930. The first Holy Mass in the new church took place on April 25, 1932. The consecrator was the then auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the newly established diocese of Aachen in 1930, Hermann Joseph Sträter . The old parish church now serves as a parish home.
