St. Barbara is the Roman Catholic parish church of Krekel , a district of Kall in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

A first chapel is documented for the year 1435. In this document, Mr. von Reifferscheid and Dyck confirm that the villagers have received permission from the Steinfeld Abbey , to whose parish Krekel belonged, to consecrate a new church. The mentioned chapel, probably built in the Gothic style, was expanded in 1723 in the Baroque style. In 1858 Krekel was separated from the mother parish of Steinfeld and raised to an independent parish .

In the 1920s, there was no longer enough space in the small church, so a new building was considered because the old church could not be expanded. Ultimately, the Cologne architect and later cathedral master builder Willy Weyres was commissioned to plan the new building. Between 1931 and 1932 the new church was built right next to the old church, which is now a listed building. The building is one of the few new buildings that Weyres planned. The consecration took place on April 24, 1932 . The old church has served as a parish hall since then. On December 26, 1944, the parish church was damaged due to the Second World War . The repair work lasted until 1952.

Today the parish of St. Barbara and several other parishes form the community of the parishes of St. Hermann-Josef Steinfeld in the diocese of Aachen .

architecture

St. Barbara is a two-aisled and four-bay hall church with a main nave, a semicircular apse in the east and a south aisle, which is spanned by a wooden ceiling corresponding to the shape of the roof. The main nave is vaulted by a Rabitz vault. The bell tower is integrated into the gable of the west facade . The arcades between the main and side aisles are structured by square columns and simple round arches. The windows also close with a round arch. The entire structure was built from rubble stones .

Furnishing

In the interior, most of the furnishings from the 1930s have been preserved. Of these, the stone high altar , which only consists of a cafeteria , the pulpit and the stained glass windows are to be mentioned . These were designed by the glass painter Hans Zepter from 1930 to 1931. The windows in the main nave show St. Agatha of Catania , St. Catherine of Alexandria , St. Simon Stock receiving the scepter from Mary, and the parish patron saint, St. Barbara of Nicomedia . The organ is a work of the Hellenthal company Weimbs Orgelbau from 1953. The instrument has 7 registers .

Bells

In the tower of St. Barbara there are two bells with the chimes g ' and b ' from 1954. Bell founder August Mark, Eifeler bell foundry Mark , from Brockscheid , cast them from bronze.
