The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Margareta in Nettersheim - Frohngau (Frohngau- Buir parish ) belongs to the diocese of Aachen ; the parish today forms the community of the parishes of St. Hermann-Josef Steinfeld with several other parishes . The church is dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch , with St. Barbara as the secondary patroness . The church is a protected architectural monument .

Building history

The existence of a chapel belonging to the parish of Tondorf is recorded as early as 1536. However, a chapel must have existed earlier, as evidenced by the church bells from 1431 and the late Gothic church tower that still exists today. Perhaps there was a chapel in Frohngau as early as 898: This is indicated in a document by King Zwentibold from 898 when Tondorf was mentioned, to which several "churches" belonged. Until 1804 Frohngau belonged to the parish Tondorf and then became an independent parish together with Buir.

The church from before 1923 was a hall church with a west tower, a simply cleaned nave and choir, to which a sacristy was attached to the east. At the beginning of the 20th century the church had become too small. That is why it was decided to build a new building.

But it wasn't until 1923 and 1924 that the parish church was rebuilt. For this purpose, the old church was demolished in 1923 except for the west tower. The first service in the new church took place at Easter 1924. It was consecrated on July 6, 1924. The plans for the new church come from the Bonn architect Theodor Schlebusch. It is a hall church with four window axes. The choir adjoins in the east. The church has 100 seats and 50 standing places. Just like the previous building, the new church is not oriented strictly to the east.

In 1944, during World War II , the church was damaged. They were fixed by 1947.

Furnishing

The tabernacle altar (late rococo ) was probably built in the 18th century. The pulpit from 1650 originally comes from the St. Johann church in Münstereifel, which was demolished in 1808 . The baptismal font was a gift from Trier Archbishop Johann IV. Ludwig von Hagen .

The eight windows of the nave date from 1973 and represent the eight bliss. The drafts for the windows were created by the painter Walter Bettendorf.
