Parish

There was probably a small church in Keldenich as early as the 7th century. Thus, Keldenich was the mother church of many other parishes in the area. In 1251 a church in Keldenich was mentioned in a document. In the document it is noted that the Archbishop of Cologne Konrad von Hochstaden handed over the church to the Steinfeld Abbey . At that time Keldenich was already an independent parish . In the 15th century, the Duke of Jülich became the church's collator . In the 16th century a pastor introduced Lutheran teaching in Keldenich, and around 1600 the parish and its residents became Catholic again. The Sötenich branch belonged to the parish until 1961, but then became independent. Today the parish of St. Dionysius and several other parishes form the community of the parishes of St. Hermann-Josef Steinfeld in the diocese of Aachen .

Church building

Nothing is known about the church mentioned in 1251. However, it can be assumed that it was a small Romanesque hall church . In the 14th or 15th century this structure was replaced by a new building. Duke Johann Wilhelm von Jülich und Berg had a new nave built between 1699 and 1701 while retaining the bell tower, which, however, was replaced by a new one in the Baroque style between 1786 and 1787 under Duke Karl Theodor von Jülich and Berg . The bell tower was also retained this time. The consecration took place on October 9, 1787 .

architecture

St. Dionysius is a hall church in the Baroque style with a three-sided choir closure in the east and a bell tower in the west made of plastered quarry stone . There are three double-lane windows on each of the long sides of the nave. The ship is spanned by a wooden, baroque ceiling. Probably dating to the 14th or 15th century tower has four storeys and concludes with an eight-sided spire .

Furnishing

The wooden ceiling of the interior was painted in 1900 by the Bonn artist Josef Röttchen. The neo-Gothic interior dates from 1879/80 . Of these, the richly carved high altar , the two side altars, the confessional and the pulpit with a richly carved sound cover should be mentioned. The pews also date from this period, as do the Stations of the Cross. The organ is the work of the organ builder Bertram from Engers with a mechanical action and was installed in Keldenich in 1870. In 1962 the instrument with registers from the organ from St. Rochus in Wollseifen was expanded to 16 registers by the company Weimbs Orgelbau from Hellenthal and provided with a pneumatic action. In 1990 the instrument was restored by the same company. The popular altar was carved from sandstone and consecrated on October 8, 1983. The stained glass windows are works by Karl Jörres from 1948. The two windows in the choir show St. Dominic receiving the rosary from Mary and the birth of Christ .

Bells

In the tower of St. Dionysius there is a three-part bell from 1926.
