Glehn is a district of Mechernich in the Eifel .

geography

Glehn is a town in the town of Mechernich ( Euskirchen district ) and is located in the southwest of North Rhine-Westphalia . The Rotbach , which is called Mühlenbach there, flows through the village . The village is on the edge of the Eifel National Park . Neighboring towns are Eicks , Berg , Floisdorf , Hostel , Schützendorf , Lückerath , Bleibuir , Bergbuir (city of Mechernich ) Düttling , and Hergarten (city of Heimbach ).

history

The old Roman road Cologne - Zülpich did not go through Glehn, it went through the Eickser Busch. The first reliable mention took place between 1183 and 1185 in the miracle book of St. Matthias in Trier , according to which a girl from Glehn was cured of a serious illness.

Glehn has belonged to the Andreas-Stift in Cologne since at least 965. Archbishop Brun of Cologne transferred the jurisdiction with the high court in Glehn ("ius territoriale seu gladij in Glehen") together with the tithe in Neunkirchen to the St. Andreas monastery, which he founded. The center of the subordination was the Fronhof , which included 250 acres. To protect its interests , the monastery appointed bailiffs , some of whom are known by name. They were members of the noble families who had their headquarters in the wider area of Glehn. After the Lords of Wolkenburg from the Drachenfelser Land, the Rode von Sinzich, the Gertzen von Sinzich, the Merode von Schloßberg, the Smeich von Birgel and others followed. These nobles usually belonged to the Duchy of Jülich with their own estates and often tried to win the rule of Glehn for the Duke of Jülich. However, the Glehners wanted to stay with Andreasstift and thus ultimately with the Kurstift Cologne. This gave rise to conflicts that continued to smolder at the Imperial Court of Justice until the end of the old Empire in 1806 and were ultimately not resolved.

On July 1, 1969, Glehn was incorporated into Mechernich.

Culture and sights

The parish church of St. Andrew with its late Romanesque tower from the 12th century can be seen from afar. In front of it is an extension from 1866. The tower has bells from 1424, 1485 and 1613, among other things. In 1961, wall and vault paintings from the 15th century were uncovered during restorations . The choir is early Gothic and represents a renewal in the late Middle Ages, comparable to St. Ursula in Cologne.

In the rectory you can still see the remains of the former Fronhof and the five meter deep dungeon for the prisoners has been preserved.

In previous centuries, the villagers often worked in the lead mines near Mechernich and only had a small sideline on a farm in the village.

Around the village square there are well-kept old half-timbered houses that are worth seeing. Multiple new buildings were built around the old core.

Today Glehn has a lively club culture , including the Waldlust music club, the Äzebälleg carnival club , the sports club, the women's choir, the volunteer fire brigade and the theater club that has existed since 1901.
