The Rotbach (called Nöthener Siefen , Schliebach , Mühlenbach or Bruchbach in the upper reaches ) is a 39.1 km long, southwestern and orographically left tributary of the Erft in the districts of Euskirchen and Rhein-Erft in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).
course
The Rotbach rises as Nöthener Siefe n in the Eifel and runs through the Rhineland . Its source is on the south-eastern edge of the Kermeter , a northern part of the Eifel, between Kall - Wallenthal in the southeast and Mechernich - Voißel in the north, two localities that the stream does not flow through. Below or northeast of Voißel, the flowing water to Mechernich- Glehn also bears the name Schliebach and from Glehn to Mechernich- Eicks it is called Mühlenbach or Bruchbach .
Within the Rhineland, the Rotbach flows mostly in a north-northeast direction through the Jülich-Zülpicher Börde and runs through districts from Zülpich to Lechenich . On the way there it forks into the Lechenicher Mühlenfließ and the Rotbach, both of which flow through Lechenich and come together again after about 8 kilometers at Konradsheim , whereby the Mühlenfließ is temporarily fed by the Erpa . Finally, the Rotbach opens near Dirmerzheim in the coming from the south Rhein influx Erftstadt to open .
Tributaries
The Eselsbach (near Mechernich-Glehn), the Bergbach (near Sinzenich), the Vlattener Bach (near Lövenich) and the Erpa (between Erftstadt-Ahrem and Lechenich) flow into the Rotbach as tributaries of the Rotbach on the orographic left . The Bleibach flows into the Rotbach at Mülheim- Wichterich as an orographically right-hand side stream .
The most important tributary of the Rotbach is the 23.9 km long Bleibach , which with a 50.036 km² catchment area makes up 21% of the Rotbach. The second longest tributary is the Vlattener Bach . Its 31.528 km² catchment area is exceeded by the 7.4 km long Lechenicher Mühlengraben (Lechenicher Mühlenbach) with 37.115 km². The following table contains the tributaries of the Rotbach in accordance with the NRW list of waters.

Characteristic
Characteristic of the Rotbach is the red-brown color of the water, especially after heavy rainfall, due to the high iron content , which is also clearly visible in the fields to the right and left of the river. A high iron content leads to light to dark red / brown color tones of the iron oxide due to the oxidation of the iron .
Flood and flood protection
The stream has a major impact on life in Friesheim , as fields and houses lie on its banks that have been repeatedly flooded by heavy rains since the 1960s. However, this danger is no longer so serious today due to the Erftstadt-Niederberg flood retention basin .
