Vussem is a district of Mechernich in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Euskirchen .

geography

Vussem lies in the valley of the Feybach , which flows through it from south to north in the direction of Euskirchen, where it flows into the Erft . The highest elevation in the vicinity is the Rüttlenkniep ( 406.3  m above sea  level ) in the north.

history

There used to be an ironworks . From 1926 to 1968 the “Cooperative of the Sacred Heart of Jesus” prepared students for ordination in the Mission House.

On July 1, 1969, the municipality of Vussem-Bergheim was incorporated into Mechernich.

  • The aqueduct bridge of Vussem is part of the Roman Eifel aqueduct , which was built in the 1st century AD to supply fresh water to Roman Cologne. During construction work for a sports field in the late 1950s, two Roman pillar foundations were carelessly destroyed. The Rhineland Regional Council took this as an opportunity to carry out a comprehensive archaeological excavation there in 1959 under the direction of Waldemar Haberey. The excavation results from 1959 formed the basis for a partial reconstruction of the facility, which is now open to tourists and can be viewed as part of the Römerkanal hiking trail at km 22.4 on the Römerweg.

State road 115 runs through the village . The section runs 1000 m away between the Mechernich and Nettersheim motorway junctions on the A 1 .

Daughters and sons of the place

  • Father Stanislaus Sobieszczyk (MSC) (1913–2001), last Sacred Heart missionary in Vussem, lifesaver of many expellees in what was then East Prussia, ordained a priest in 1940 by Bishop Clemens August von Galen.
