Maria Gail with church

Maria Gail ( Slovenian : Marija na Zilji ) is a small suburb of the second largest city in Carinthia , south of Villach . The place with around 400 inhabitants is located directly at the confluence of the Gail , the largest right tributary of the Drava .

history

The foundation of the place goes back to Christian missionaries who came from the northern Roman Aquileja to the Roman province of Noricum at the time in order to spread Christianity. Towards the end of the 6th century, the surrounding area was taken over by invading Slavic tribes who, in turn, brought back paganism . In the 8th century the region, like the whole of today's Carinthian area, came under Bavarian rule, under which a second Christianization took place. There are no written sources for the foundation of the place and the church . It is obvious, however, that the village was founded by Christianized Lombards who ruled over the "Zeilia" landscape, today's Gailtal . The place itself developed as a result of the growing importance of the church as a place of pilgrimage to the original parish for Villach and the lower Gailtal; at her wedding she was under 25 affiliate churches.

In 1973 the previously independent community of Maria Gail was incorporated into the city of Villach as part of a regional reform . Today Maria Gail plays a not insignificant role as a place of pilgrimage and as a green residential suburb for the nearby upper center of Villach. There is a large stud in the village, which has a good reputation as a riding center beyond the region.

Pilgrimage Church of Maria Gail

The first written mention of the church is dated to 1136. The originally Romanesque choir tower church was enlarged around 1450. During the Turkish wars in the 15th century, the church was destroyed in a Turkish invasion in 1478. After its reconstruction, the church was consecrated again in 1486. In 1580 the church tower collapsed. In the 16th century the Maria Gailer pilgrimage church was reformed like the other churches in the country and remained under the Lutheran aegis for several decades .

The nave is dominated by the lavishly furnished baroque high altar , in the center of which stands a carved wooden Madonna in protective cloak from around 1600. This high relief is considered a miraculous image and established the reputation of the church as a pilgrimage church . The highlight and art-historical jewel is the late Gothic winged altar , which, as one of the last works of the Villach School, is probably the most perfect work of art. It was created between 1505 and 1515.

On the outside walls of the church there are remarkable stone sculptures. A rarity is a representation of the Last Judgment; the sculpture was probably made before 1300.
