Giescheid is a district of the municipality of Hellenthal in the Eifel in the district of Euskirchen , North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).

location

Giescheid is 5.65 km (as the crow flies ) south of the core town of Hellenthal on the Gieschberg ( 651.1  m above sea  level ). It is one of the highest Eifel villages with a beautiful all-round view. The village has no through traffic, the district road 68 passes the neighboring village of Rescheid a little south-east of the village . The Burgkopf ( 578  m above sea level ) with the remains of a medieval castle rises between Giescheid and Ramscheid and thus beyond the Prether Bach , which flows past the town to the west .

church

The Bartholomäus chapel ( 646.3  m above sea level ) from 1669 is in Giescheid . The second patroness is St. Mary Magdalene . In summer , masses are held in the simple chapel , which was given a tower in 1898. The three steel bells that were cast by the Bochumer Verein in 1876 are still rung by hand. The small chapel is the highest church in the diocese of Aachen. There is a mighty linden tree next to the church building . This imposing tree is thought to date from the time the chapel was built, i.e. almost 350 years old. Its trunk circumference measures 7.50 m.
