Walter Perkins

Walter Perkins (* 10. February 1932 in Chicago ; † 14. February 2004 in Jamaica (Queens) , New York City ) was an American jazz - drummer .

Live and act

Walter Perkins studied with Oliver Coleman in 1949 , then worked in clubs and was a member of the Ahmad Jamal trio in 1956/57. From 1958 to 1962 he had his own formation, the Modern Jazz Trio Plus Three (MJT + 3) with the alto saxophonist Frank Strozier , the trumpeter Willie Thomas , the bassist Bob Cranshaw and the young pianist Muhal Richard Abrams and Harold Mabern . This formation recorded an album for Vee-Jay Records and existed until 1962. Cranshaw and Perkins were also members of the backing band of singer Carmen McRae and recorded with her in 1961 the album Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man and Other Billie Holiday Classics .

Perkins played with Sonny Rollins in 1962 and then worked as a companion for Carmen McRae (1962/63), Art Farmer , Teddy Wilson , Clark Terry , Billy Taylor , Lucky Thompson , Al Cohn / Zoot Sims (1981) and Perry Robinson . In the 1980s, Perkins helped found the New York Music For Young Adolescent program.
