Oliver Coleman
Oliver Coleman (born 1914 in Beaumont , Texas ; † November 6, 1965 in Chicago ) was an American drummer and music teacher in the field of jazz and rhythm & blues who was active in the music scene in Chicago.
Life
Coleman played with Earl Hines in the late 1930s , heard solo in titles such as "Hines Ryhthm", "Ridin 'a Riff", "Solid Mama" and "Goodnight, Sweet Dreams, Goodnight". In 1940 he worked for Ray Nance , and in the course of his career also worked for Erskine Tate , Horace Henderson and Dinah Washington . In the 1950s he recorded with Marl Young ("We're Off", Sunbeam Records) and worked as a studio musician for Chess Records .
In the field of jazz and R&B he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 1937 and 1954, apart from the aforementioned with Dorothy Donegan , Eddie South , Eddie Johnson , Willie Mabon and Al Smith . Hillard Brown and Charles Walton were among his students .
