Losheimergraben or Losheimer Graben is a settlement on the German - Belgian border in the area of the German municipality of Hellenthal and the Belgian municipality of Büllingen in the Eifel .

location

The place is located directly on the B 265 , which almost completely follows the border in this area. In Losheimergraben there was a border crossing between Germany and Belgium before the opening of the borders , which is still marked on many signs today. In the Belgian part, right on the border, there is a roundabout where the provincial roads N 626 (to Manderfeld ) and N 632 (to Büllingen ) cross, both of which end at the B 265.

In Losheimergraben there is one of the sources of the Kyll and in the immediate vicinity the Our rises on the Eichelsberg , a little to the west in Büllingen is the source of the Warche .

history

From the Treaty of Versailles (1920), the formerly Prussian area belonged to Belgium until it returned to Germany on August 28, 1958 on the basis of the German-Belgian border treaty of 1956. Until 1977 the Belgian district belonged to the municipality of Manderfeld , which became part of the larger municipality of Büllingen.

December 16, 1944 - the start of the Battle of the Bulge - hit a train ( "Platoon") of a reconnaissance unit of the 394th Infantry Regiment of the 99th Infantry Division of the United States on a battalion of the 3rd Parachute Division (Wehrmacht) . As a result, there was fighting that inflicted heavy losses on the German battalion that were decisive for the course of the Battle of the Bulge . The train ( "Platoon") was thus the highest excellent unit for a single performance of the Americans in World War 2. The commemorative plaque with the Presidential Unit Citation No. 26 is on the right side of the N626 towards the roundabout.

tourism

The route of the decommissioned Vennquerbahn , which was dismantled in 2007 and at which there was a separate stop, runs around one and a half kilometers south of Losheimergraben near Losheim . The railway line has been expanded into a hiking, riding and cycling route ( RAVeL network line 45a Waimes-Jünkerath ), with a connection both in Weywertz to the Vennbahn and via Stadtkyll to Jünkerath on the railway line as the Kylltal cycle path. The trail was officially opened at the beginning of May 2015.
