River Kyll near Erdorf 2018

The Kyll , pronounced "Kill" [ kʰil ], is a 127.6 km long, northern and left tributary of the Moselle . It flows - apart from three short spring waters from the Belgian region of Wallonia  - in the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate .

Starting from the border of the Walloon Region (Wallonia) in Belgium, which is near the source, the river flows through the districts of Euskirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia) as well as the Vulkaneifel , Bitburg-Prüm , Trier-Saarburg and the independent city of Trier (all Rhineland-Palatinate ). It is one of the longest rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate, because the significantly longer rivers Moselle, Saar and Sauer cross borders, and it is the longest and richest river in the southern Eifel (10.16 m³ / s). The Kyll is a second order body of water from the mouth in Trier-Ehrang up to the North Rhine-Westphalian border.

Name interpretation

The name Kyll goes back to the Celtic word for "Bach", gilum , which developed into Kila in the Middle Ages . The Roman civil servant and poet Ausonius named in the Mosella , a travel description in heximeters from AD 371, the Kyll a fast flowing, raging body of water: rapidus Celbis (v. 359).

geography

course

source

The Kyll arises in the Zitterwald from the union of three short spring waters near the village of Losheimergraben , which belongs to the Belgian municipality of Büllingen (Wallonia) and the German municipality of Hellenthal (Euskirchen district). One of these waters has its source in the Belgian part of the village in the basement of a hotel. They unite at the state border at Bundesstraße 265 at about 660  m above sea level. NHN ; only there does the river kilometrage begin .

Upper course

The first 3.5 km stretch of the Kyll - below Losheimergraben - is in North Rhine-Westphalia, after which it flows 900 m long on the border with Rhineland-Palatinate, and the river, which initially runs west-northwest-east-southeast, forms a few kilometers below its origin natural border between the Zitterwald in the north and the Schnee-Eifel in the south. For the next 2.6 km, the river runs in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Vulkaneifel through the north of the municipality of Hallschlag , and then for 1.8 km again in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Euskirchen in the municipality of Dahlem between Schopphof and Frauenkron . Then it flows for 1.3 km directly west of the border in Rhineland-Palatinate and reaches - after crossing under the federal highway 421  - the Kronenburger See , into which the Taubkyll flows and in which the Kyll changes back to North Rhine-Westphalia. A cycle path leads along the reservoir and the river on the route of the disused Vennquerbahn . After the reservoir, the Kyll runs through the Dahlem district of Kronenburg and reaches 4.2 flow kilometers below the reservoir, after crossing the federal highway 51 and after the Dahlem Hammerhütte finally Rhineland-Palatinate.

In the local district of Vulkaneifel, the Kyll flows through Stadtkyll , where the Werft joins. From Glaadt the river is accompanied by the Hürth-Kalscheuren – Ehrang (Eifel route) railway line to its mouth ; the railway line crosses the river on numerous bridges and cuts through mountain ranges in 10 tunnels within Kyllschleifen. From around Jünkerath the Kyll turns to the southeast. Then it passes Gönnersdorf and flows between Birgel and Lissendorf . The B 421 leaves the river at the Crumps Mill , which is located next . Then the Kyll passes Ober- and Niederbettingen in the east, Bolsdorf in the southwest, Dohm in the southwest and Bewingen in the northeast. Then it flows around the castle fountain Gerolstein and turns to Pelm to the south; from the castle fountain it is accompanied by the federal highway 410 .

Middle course

The river then runs westward through Gerolstein , where it breaks through the foothills of the Vulkaneifel . Before Lissingen , where the Oosbach flows into it, it turns south again. After the village, the B 410 leaves the river. From now on , the river runs winding through the Kyllburger Waldeifel (Waldeifel; Kylleifel) . Before Birresborn it turns to Mürlenbach to the south-south-west and flows south to and through Densborn .

After that the Kyll changes to the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm. It flows through it between Usch in the northwest and Zendscheid in the southeast. Then the river runs through St. Thomas . From the winding section near Kyllburg , the river runs a little to the west, touching Malberg to the south. Shortly afterwards it turns to the southeast and, when crossing under the federal highway 60, to the south. After this affected the Kyll - after leaving the Kyllburger Waldeifel and crossing under the federal highway 257  - Erdorf the west and turns around from her cycle when Mötscher Weiler Albach southeast. After crossing under the federal highway 50 , it passes Metterich southwest and flows through Hüttingen .

Lower course

After passing through Philippsheim to the south-west , after which the Spanger Bach flows in, the river turns back to the south-south-west, passes Speicher and touches Auw an der Kyll  - both to the west. Then it makes a left curve around Hosten, which is on a plateau, and flows a bit to the east.

Then the Kyll changes to the district of Trier-Saarburg. In it it passes Daufenbach and Mühlenflürchen to the west, whereby it runs south to Kordel , where the Welschbilligerbach flows into it. From Kordel the river turns to the southeast and is from now on accompanied by the federal highway 422 . The Butzerbach flows into the Ramsteinerbrücke settlement in Kordel , followed by the Lohrbach a little below it .

Then the Kyll reaches the area of the independent city of Trier . There it flows through - after the confluence of the Kutbach  - the Trier district of Ehrang , where the Linkenbach flows and the B 422 ends. The Wallenbach joins a little below it . Shortly afterwards, after leaving the Eifel route , the Kyll crosses under  the Moselle route (Trier – Koblenz) and the federal road 53 and flows in its final section along the federal road 52 . Then it flows into the Moselle, which flows from the south at about 123  m above sea level.
