Sankt Thomas lies in the valley of the Kyll . The community also includes the living spaces Bruderholz, Kasholz, St. Johann and Forsthaus Johanniswald.

history

The first written mention of the place comes from the year 973. Originally the place was called Ernistburen or Ernistbura , later then Erlenburen or Erlesbura . Only later did the place take on the name of the St. Thomas Monastery . The three historic districts are the Klosterbering, the Klostermühle on the other side of the Kyll and the development around the eastern bridgehead of the Kyllbrücke, which is located south of the Klostermühle and Kloster.

In St. Thomas, the former is Cistercian Monastery of St. Thomas at the Kyll , which is now the Diocese of Trier serves as a training center. The convent was founded around 1170 near a chapel built in honor of Thomas Beckett. The monastery of St. Thomas was abolished in the course of secularization in 1802, which at the same time deprived the place of its economic basis. After the Prussian state bought the house in 1847, it was given to the Bishop of Trier in 1852, who used it as a penal institution ( Demeritenhaus ) for clergy until 1942 . In the period from 1957 to 1974 the house functioned as the Catholic rural elementary school of the Trier diocese.

Today the former monastery serves as the retreat house of St. Thomas of the Trier diocese .
