The Verkehrsverbund Region Trier ( VRT ) is an amalgamation of the Zweckverband VRT and VMS Verkehrs-Management und Service GmbH. The association for the Trier region consists of the independent city of Trier and the districts of Bernkastel-Wittlich , Bitburg-Prüm , Vulkaneifel and Trier-Saarburg . The VMS is an association of the below mentioned transport companies. The aim of VRT GmbH is to ensure a uniform public transport tariff.

The VRT borders in the north on the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS), in the east on the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel (VRM), in the south on the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) and the Saarländischer Verkehrsverbund (Saar VV), im West to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg with the bus and train company Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). There are tickets available, also of the neighboring transport associations and countries are on parts of areas like the SaarLorLux ticket . There is also a transitional tariff (day and monthly tickets) for trips to Luxembourg. There is also a transitional tariff for the trains of the Moselweinbahn ( Bullay - Traben-Trarbach ), which can also be used with all tickets of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Mosel (VRM), provided that the start or destination station of the journey is in the VRM area. The valid state tickets for Rhineland-Palatinate , the Rhineland-Palatinate ticket and the Rhineland-Palatinate + Luxembourg ticket are also recognized in the VRT's means of transport. These tickets are also valid in Saarland .

Criticism of the VRT

Again and again, sharp criticism is leveled at the fact that the VRT carries out a fare increase at twelve-month intervals. Local politicians criticize, among other things, the lack of transparency in the calculation of fares. So there are always disputes between the districts and the city of Trier. Since it is no longer possible to finance economical local transport in rural areas due to demographic change and the resulting decline in the number of schoolchildren, the districts in the VRT are forced to raise prices, while the city of Trier wants to promote urban local transport and increase fares act counterproductive. Since the distribution of votes in the VRT is not based on the number of inhabitants or the number of passengers, but each district or the city only has one vote, the city of Trier is therefore regularly outvoted 4 to 1. As a result, a complete dismantling of the VRT or the withdrawal of the city of Trier was already up for debate.
