About this picture
Roman villa Otrang

Fließem is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It has been part of the Bitburger Land community since July 1, 2014 .

geography

The community is located in the Eifel on the Bickendorfer plateau, which is part of the Gutland . Fliessem also includes the Nattenheimer Barriere, Obere Fließemer Mühle and Otrang residential areas .

history

The Roman Villa Otrang , built in the 1st century, was discovered during earthworks in 1825 and the mosaic floors found indicate a Roman settlement from this time. Two temples ( Diana and Minerva ) were later found in 1911 and exposed . Today the Villa Otrang is accessible as a museum. Found graves from the 6th and 7th centuries show that the Roman settlement was conquered and used by the Franks .

The first documentary mention of the place comes from July 25, 804, when it was named under the name "flaistes haimomarc" in an exchange document from the Prüm Abbey . Another mention was made as "Wleysheym" in the Prümer Urbar from 893. The place gained importance under Friedrich von Schleiden (1397–1427), an abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Prüm, who gave the church valuable relics . When a centenary indulgence was granted to visit the monastery chapel in 1464, it became a place of pilgrimage .

The place name changed several times over the centuries. In the 9th century the place was called Flaisteshaimo marca , later it became Wlesheim , during the Middle Ages it was called Vlissheim , later as Flaistershaim , until the current name finally prevailed.
