In the place name, the Gothic “dal” (Old High German and Middle High German: Tal, New German: dal, tell) = valley, meaning home or house in the valley. Dahlem is mentioned for the first time as "Dalheim" after Heinrich Beyer in the document from 783 (donation to the Echternach monastery ). The name of the place is spelled consistently in two-syllable form, albeit with changing word design. The following are recorded: Dalheim , Dalem villa (893), Dalheim (1258), Dalheym (1317), Dailheim (1326) and Dalheim (1377).
