Erdorf is a district (district) of Bitburg in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . Until it was incorporated on June 7, 1969, Erdorf was an independent municipality .

geography

The place is located in the southern Eifel about six kilometers northeast of the center of Bitburg in the Kylltal .

history

It was an abbot of the Prüm Abbey (Abbot Urold 1010-1018) who first mentioned Erdorf by name when he mentioned a farm in Erdorf and rights of use in the nearby Kyllwald. In a deed of donation around 1100 AD, it is mentioned that a certain Weezel donated a manorial house near Erdorf to the Prüm monastery. It was a lonely estate in the mighty Kyllwald and not easy to find. Hence the rural interpretation of the name Erdorf "Irrdorf", in the vicinity of which one could get lost in the vast forests.

A farm in Eredorf was located under the property belonging to the St. Marien monastery in Prüm and is as such in the confirmation document of Abbot Alberto von Prüm v. J. 1136 listed.

Around 1300 AD there was already a church whose only income came from raising the bridge toll. In 1516, Count Franz von Taxis set up a mail route on behalf of Emperor Maximilian I, which led from Brussels to Vienna and over the Kylltal Bridge in Erdorf. Around 1600 AD the plague also raged in Erdorf. Only one man and two women survived. During the time under Emperor Napoleon, Erdorf belonged to the diocese of Metz and was raised to an independent parish in 1803. In 1897 the foundation stone was laid for the new parish church.

The upward development of Erdorf was shaped by the construction of the Kylltaleisenbahn in 1870. On June 1, 1871, the entire line was completed, but then had to be kept free for the retreating troops from the Franco-German War. Erdorf became the main hub for the entire West Eifel. In 1910 the branch line to Bitburg was built. During the First and Second World Wars, the Eifelbahn line and the branch line via Bitburg were used to transport troops, supplies and materials. As part of a major administrative reform, the independent municipality of Erdorf was dissolved on June 6, 1969 and incorporated into the city of Bitburg on June 7, 1969. After the incorporation, the place was officially named Bitburg-Erdorf by the Trier district government. Since then, the responsible municipal administration has been the city administration of Bitburg.

The interests of the Erdorf district are represented by a local advisory council made up of eleven members. The head of the village is Werner Becker.
