Irsch is a district (district) of Bitburg in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Until it was incorporated on June 7, 1969, Irsch was an independent municipality .

geography

The place is in the southern Eifel about three kilometers northeast of the center of Bitburg on the Matzenbach .

Irsch is a still existing hamlet that developed from the beginning of the 18th century from two farms, a chapel, a private cemetery and surrounding meadows. Due to the almost untouched town center (no modern new buildings), the Bitburg district of Irsch is protected as a monument zone.

history

The history of Irsch (also known as "Ysch", "Ysche" or "Ersche") goes back to the 9th century. Original documents indicate that the Irscher Höfe should have existed as early as the 9th century under Emperor Charlemagne, at that time consisting of two basic goods. However, Irsch was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century. At that time, the Irscher Höfe belonged to the rule of Dudeldorf and Seinsfeld. Detailed records, for example of the cost of grain and the wages of a servant and a maid, are signs of careful bookkeeping by the landlords of that time. In the 18th century the town of Irsch almost died out, as all but one of the residents died of cholera in 1751. Remembrance of the victims of this plague is a tradition in Irsch to this day: on January 20, the so-called “Döcken Daag”, only vegetarian dishes are consumed in Irsch from sunrise to sunset. Irsch today To this day, the town of Irsch is characterized by the two farms that have been preserved - today's residential buildings No. 1 and No. 2. The dominant residential building No. 1 was built in 1751 and consists of an angular courtyard with a courtyard-side and rear transverse tract. Numerous large barns and stables with smaller outbuildings (also known as farm buildings or farm buildings) adjoin both farmsteads. House No. 2 with the associated farm buildings and stables also dates from the early 18th century; According to the inscription on the stable door, these were built in 1728. A special gem is the Irscher Hof chapel, which belongs to residential building No. 2. This Catholic private chapel St. Johannes Evangelist, built in 1827, is characterized by a simple, rectangular floor plan. The interior of the chapel encloses a baroque altar that comes from the baroque palace in Bitburg. Irsch's private cemetery was built in 1955 above Irscher Hof 2.
