Neighboring communities

Gemünden borders in the north on the community Haina (district Waldeck-Frankenberg), in the east on the community Gilserberg ( Schwalm-Eder district ), in the south on the community Wohratal ( district Marburg-Biedenkopf ) and in the west on the city Rosenthal (district Waldeck-Frankenberg).

City structure

The city consists of the districts Ellnrode , Gemünden, Grüsen , Herbelhausen , Lehnhausen , Schiffelbach and Sehlen .

history

Evangelical parish church from 1435–1485

Gemünden is said to have emerged from seven villages: Holzbach, Giebelingsbach, Burghardshausen, Ernstdorf, Steigershausen, Osterbach and Katzbach.

The first documentary mentions under the name "Zegemunde" come from the years 750-779. The second written mention was in 1223. Gemünden was first mentioned as a city in 1253. At that time, Gemünden belonged to the Counts of Ziegenhain . This affiliation is also expressed in the city coat of arms: a red-armored black rooster with a goat's head is depicted in a white field; under the wings of the heraldic animal there are two six-pointed stars. When the Ziegenhain family of counts died out in the male line in 1450, the county of Ziegenhain and with it Gemünden fell to the Landgraviate of Hesse ,

In the 16th century, the city experienced a greater period of prosperity: a large fountain was built in 1523, the school was built in 1541, a town hall was built on the market square in 1564, and the first water pipe made of wooden pipes was built in 1587. The Jewish cemetery, which is also used by neighboring Jewish communities, e.g. B. the one in Rosenthal was used.

The catastrophes from the late 16th to the 18th centuries claimed heavy casualties. The fire of 1583 caused great damage, the plague of 1584 killed ⅔ of the population. The Thirty Years 'War and the Seven Years' War also demanded the utmost from the citizens through billeting and financial contributions. Not least because of this, there were repeated disputes between the city council and the rest of the citizenry over questions of the local budget.

In 1714, at the instigation of Landgrave Karl, a reformed mother church was set up in Gemünden, where a reformed parish was established in 1689.

In the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia , the city was the administrative seat of the canton of Gemünden .

After the German War in 1866, Gemünden and the former Electorate of Hessen-Kassel became part of the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau .

From 1909 to 1914 the Wohratalbahn was built, the water pipeline association founded (Gemünden receives a new, more modern water supply), and a new school was built. The water supply for the city and the villages of Altenhaina , Halgehausen , Bockendorf , Sehlen and Grüsen is based on the water pipeline from the Kirschgarten spring to Gemünden and the pumping station in Kirschgarten built in 1967 by the Gemünden-Bunstruth Water Management Association .

From 1933 to 1943 the city was the seat of the district court of Gemünden (Wohra) .

1972 the passenger traffic by the railway was stopped. In the winter of 1980/81 the cessation of freight traffic and the dismantling of the tracks followed. The station building has been preserved and is today a cultural monument used for gastronomy according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

Incorporations

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipalities of Grüsen, Herbelhausen, Lehnhausen and Sehlen were incorporated as part of the Hessian regional reform . On January 1, 1974, Ellnrode and Schiffelbach ( Marburg district ) were added by virtue of state law. Local districts with local advisory councils and local councilors were formed for all formerly independent communities .

Town twinning

In 1975 the city of Gemünden committed itself to the European idea and concluded the following city partnerships :

Since these partnerships were concluded, numerous mutual visits have been carried out at the club level, which has resulted in the partnership relationships being supported by the population of Gemünden.

Worth seeing

The city wall and the witch tower

In 1253 Gemünden was granted city rights and it is believed that a high stone ring wall including four half-shell towers was built to secure the city on this occasion . Due to the further development of weapons in the 16th century, walls , gates and towers lost their actual function. They could not be dispensed with, however, as they offered protection from wandering robbers and beggars . In 1818 there was a big fire in Gemünden after which large parts of the stone ring wall were removed and used for reconstruction. The only tower that remained was the Witches Tower , which served as a watchtower and prison . The witch tower is located on the grounds of the Protestant rectory.

The Protestant town church

The core of the Gemündener Stadtkirche was built between 1432 and 1485 as a late Gothic hall church . 1803-1806 the nave of the church was thoroughly rebuilt due to dilapidation and a classical hall building was created . During this renovation, the altar and pulpit found their place in the middle of the nave, while the organ was placed in the east gallery. From 1886 to 1952/53 the altar was placed under the organ on the east side of the building, but in 1952/53 the altar was moved back to the center of the nave. The church tower is on the west side of the nave and is 52 meters high. At the main portal there are so-called devil's claws about the origin of which you can tell different stories. As was customary in medieval towns, the area around the church was home to the town cemetery . The burial site in the middle of the city was relocated in the 18th century, however, as a burden for the residents.

The former reformed rectory

After the city fire of 1583, the impressive half-timbered house was built , which today is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Gemünden. The parish acquired the building on the churchyard stairs in 1721 and the reformed pastor lived in the property for 213 years . The reformed elementary school was also housed in this building until 1838 .

The town hall

The town hall of the city of Gemünden was built in 1823 and differed significantly from the rest of the buildings in terms of its design and color. The clearly structured and generously windowed half-timbered construction, dispensing with turrets and elaborate ornaments, made clear the conscious break with princely rule and the move towards a bourgeois society. The town hall became the center of the city administration. From 1834, the newly created community committee and the city council met here to discuss and make decisions with the mayor at the top. The town hall was a multifunctional building. The fire fighting equipment was stored there and weddings were celebrated in the town hall and the annual citizens' ball was held. Also court was held in the town hall. The building was the center of local events. Today these different uses no longer exist. The town hall is purely an administrative building and the official seat of the mayor.

The old train station

In 1911 the train station was built in the north of the city , through which the stop named "Bahnhof Süd" was created. With the construction of this rail link, there were great hopes for the development of the city, as goods and people could be transported faster and cheaper. Mail delivery also improved. However, expectations regarding the profitability of the railway were not fulfilled and passenger traffic was discontinued in 1972. The freight ended in winter 1980/1981 and the dismantling of the tracks followed. What remains are the building of the Gemünden Süd stop and the Gemündener train station, where a restaurant takes care of the well-being of its guests.
