Railway stations in Hessen |
The Gemünden (Wohra) train station was the end of the Wohratalbahn to Kirchhain and the Kellerwaldbahn to Zimmerrode . The station building survived the closure and dismantling of the railway lines and is now a cultural monument under the Hessian Monument Protection Act. The Gemünden (Wohra) Süd stop on the Wohratalbahn was important for passenger traffic because of its more favorable location to the city.
history
The train station in the small town of Gemünden (Wohra) in northern Hesse was intended to be the operating center of a branch line from Kirchhain to Frankenberg (Eder) and the end point of the Zimmerrode – Gemünden branch line. The station building erected by Alois Holtmeyer was put into operation on October 2, 1911 with the opening of the Kellerwaldbahn. The planned continuation of the Wohratalbahn to Frankenberg was not built as a result of the First World War . As a result, the station never achieved the importance it was intended for and the facilities that had already been completed and the reception building were too large for the actual volume of traffic.
On May 28, 1972, passenger and freight traffic between Zimmerrode and Gilserberg ended on both routes. The remaining goods traffic of the Kellerwaldbahn was handled via Gemünden and the Wohratalbahn until all traffic was discontinued in the winter of 1980/81. The tracks were dismantled in 1982.
Railway systems
Reception building
The station building with attached goods shed was built according to a design by Alois Holtmeyer in 1912. It is a plastered building on the eaves , the flanking extensions of which are partly made of half-timbered houses . The building is designed in neo-baroque forms with a mansard roof .
Freight transport
In addition to the free loading tracks, a head and side ramp as well as a weighbridge for loads of up to 35 t were available for freight traffic.
Locomotive station
In Gemünden there was a locomotive station at the head of the station in the direction of Zimmerrode with a two-track locomotive shed and a coaling system. The locomotive station was assigned to the Marburg (Lahn) depot.
"Alter Bahnhof" cultural monument
After the railway was shut down, the building was renovated in terms of monument preservation and has been used for gastronomy since 1986 under the name " Alter Bahnhof ". As early as 1993, the "Old Station" received the Hessian Monument Protection Prize . The large goods shed was converted for family and club celebrations and the former platform was converted into a beer garden . In addition, a rail bus was set up for small, intimate special events, such as children's birthdays or school groups. Next was an old Mitropa - Sleeping car of the Deutsche Reichsbahn erected as a place to stay.
“ Gleis 3 - Kunst & Kultur eV ” is the name of an association that has also been based in the old station since 2002 . Its programs range from concerts to vernissages, puppet theater and literary breakfasts to flea markets.
On July 30, 2018, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the outer wall for the two transports of expellees from Hohenelbe, Sudetenland and Dómbovár, Hungary, each with 1,200 people.
Gemünden (Wohra) Süd stop
The location of the Gemündener Bahnhof in the north of the city was determined by the route towards Frankenberg and the introduction of the Kellerwaldbahn. The Gemünden (Wohra) Süd stop was more favorable to the city . The distance between the two stations was 1.7 km. With the cessation of passenger traffic, the stop was also lifted. The station building still exists.
