Illiers-Combray is a French commune with 3324 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Eure-et-Loir department in the Center-Val de Loire region . The city is located on the left bank of the Loir , 25 kilometers from Chartres .
Surname
The name Illiers is a variation of Hilaire , Latin Hilarius , after Hilarius von Poitiers .
The small town became famous in particular through Marcel Proust , who described it under the name Combray in his cycle of novels In Search of Lost Time ( À la recherche du temps perdu ). The current composite name was decided in 1971 and published as a decree in the Journal Officiel . The occasion was the 100th birthday of the writer Marcel Proust. Illiers-Combray is the only French commune with a name derived from a literary work.
