economy
Due to the rich sandstone deposits, there have been numerous stone quarries in Épernon since the 15th century. Among other things, the building material for the Maintenon aqueduct was promoted here. After the opening of the railway line to Paris, the capital , which was in upheaval under Baron Haussmann, became a major buyer of the sandstone from Épernon. Millstones were also made in Épernon for many centuries and transported to all of Europe towards the end of the 19th century.
