The Drouette is a river in France that runs through the Île-de-France and Center-Val de Loire regions. It has its source in the Haute-Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park , near Saint-Benoît , in the municipality of Auffargis . The river initially drains to the southwest, then turns to the northwest and after 40 kilometers flows into the Louis XIV Canal as a right tributary at Villiers-le-Morhier , as the navigable river Eure is called in this area . On its way, the Drouette crosses the Yvelines and Eure-et-Loir departments .

history

At the request of the French King Louis XIV , his famous fortress builder Vauban planned to build water from the Eure Valley via a more than 80 kilometers long water pipe to supply the water features in the palace gardens of the Palace of Versailles . The Eure, Voise and Drouette rivers were partially canalised under the name Canal Louis XIV to bring in the necessary building materials . After around five years of construction, the project was canceled for political and financial reasons, and an imposing aqueduct can still be seen in the palace gardens of Schloss Maintenon .
