The Voise is a river in France that runs in the Eure-et-Loir department , in the Center-Val de Loire region . It rises in the Beauce landscape , in the municipality of Voise of the same name . The river drains first in a northerly, later in a north-westerly direction and flows into the Eure after 33 kilometers at Maintenon as a left tributary . The river between the Ymeray and the estuary was canalized , but is no longer permitted for navigation today .

history

At the request of the French King Louis XIV , his famous fortress builder Vauban planned to build water from the Eure Valley via a more than 80 kilometers long water pipe to supply the water features in the palace gardens of the Palace of Versailles . The Eure, Voise and Drouette rivers were partially canalised under the name Canal Louis XIV to bring in the necessary building materials . After around five years of construction, the project was canceled for political and financial reasons, and an imposing aqueduct can still be seen in the palace gardens of Schloss Maintenon .
