history
In the Middle Ages , the Seigneurie Maintenon belonged to the domain of the Counts of Montfort and was devastated in the Hundred Years War and during the First Huguenot War. After Maintenon had been raised to barony under his lord Louis Charles François d'Angennes in 1595 , Louis Charles' son achieved the elevation of the property to marquisate in 1641 .
When Françoise d'Aubigné , who later became the mistress and secret wife of Louis XIV , bought the lordship including the moated castle in 1674, the king elevated her to a marquisate with peerage (French: marquisat-pairie) in 1688, whereupon its owner at the time today mainly under the Name Madame de Maintenon is known.
