Jean-François Collin d'Harleville (born May 30, 1755 in Maintenon near Chartres , † February 24, 1806 in Paris ) was a French poet and playwright .

Life

Collin d'Harleville first studied law, but then turned to literature. His work consists in particular of a number of amiable character pieces, including his best-known work Le vieux célibataire , which were played in his time on the most important stages, especially in revolutionary and Napoleonic France, but which are hardly known today. His other works were considered weak by his contemporaries.

In 1803 he was appointed as a member of the Académie française (after the turmoil of the revolution temporarily referred to as the Institut national des sciences et des arts ). Another honor was acceptance into the Legion of Honor donated by Napoleon .
