The Gußmannshöhle is 91 meters long and is located near Lenningen in the Gutenberg district in Baden-Württemberg on the Swabian Alb . The vertical extension of the cave is 16 meters. The typical crevasse cave is 680 meters above sea level .
The cave was discovered by Karl Gußmann in 1890. It was excavated in 1890/91. The paleontological yield, however, was low. Some mammoth molars and tooth fragments were found. In May 1891 the Gußmannshöhle was opened to the public as a show cave . The first electric arc lighting was installed as early as 1891, but was removed after three months due to maintenance errors. The cave received permanent electrical lighting in 1922.
The cave has very beautiful stalactite formations. It also had calcium turf , which had to be removed when it was opened up. The removed calcium turf is exhibited with other exhibits in the local history museum in Kirchheim unter Teck . The stalactite cave consists of four halls and ends above a shaft.
The Gutenberger Höhle , also a show cave, is only 200 meters away .
The access route to the cave had to be closed because of a rock fall after there were dangerous rockfalls at the Gussmannshöhle . After successful security measures, the cave (2009) is open to the public again.
The Gußmannshöhle has been recognized as an important geotope and geopoint of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb since September 2016 .
