The Kolbinger Höhle is a natural 330 meter long stalactite cave near Kolbingen in the Tuttlingen district in Baden-Württemberg . It is located in the mass limestone of the Malms of the Swabian Alb and is the only show cave on the southwestern Alb .

history

The front part of the cave, the cathedral-like Stefanshöhle , had been known for a long time, but was first mentioned in 1879 in the description of the Oberamts von Tuttlingen. In 1913 the beautifully sintered rear part was discovered by some young men from Kolbingen.

Then the first tourist approaches followed. The cave was lit with candles and carbide lamps and the visit was quite good until the outbreak of World War I. Between the two world wars, things got quieter with the cave. After the Second World War , the stairs and bridges were renovated and electrical lighting was installed. In 1950 a big cave festival was celebrated. After defects appeared in the cave, it had to be closed in 1958. When the problems were resolved, the cave was reopened to visitors in 1968. The Kolbinger Cave is the only show cave in the southwestern Alb. Above the cave entrance and the rock gate, a sheltered hut belonging to the Swabian Alb Association offers visitors the opportunity to rest.

Since July 2016 the Kolbinger Höhle has been one of 26 information points of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb .

description

The cave is 810  m above sea level. NHN . It consists of several halls connected by narrow passages and is richly decorated with stalactites and sintered formations; At the “Grail Castle” in the back of the guide path there is also so-called moon milk on a wall .

research

The entire cave was surveyed around 1975. A re-measurement of the show cave part using theodolite was carried out in the course of 1997. In the mid-1980s, research was intensified in particular by the “Arge Höhle und Karst Stuttgart”, with the bones of a brown bear being found at the bottom of the shaft . The local group Kolbingen of the Swabian Alb Association mainly looks after the show cave section; the cave research group "SAVHK" affiliated to the local group is active in the parts not accessible to visitors.
