The Drachenhöhle Syrau is a stalactite cave in Syrau in Saxony .

history

The cave was discovered on March 14, 1928 during quarry work by the quarry foreman Ludwig Undeutsch. Economic interests and concerns about jobs had to be weighed up, but just a few days later the continued existence of the cave was assured and on September 28, 1928 it was opened to the first visitors. Associated with this was a scientific investigation of the cave by Alfred Uhlemann and Ernst Weise. The results were summarized in the 1929 Guide to the Dragon Cave . The increasing popularity of the cave made it possible to expand the publicly accessible parts of the cave. The approximately 15 meter deep carbonate karst cave extends over a total length of 550 meters. Of this, 350 meters are developed for tourism. There are several interconnected cave lakes in the various rooms of the cave. The Drachenhöhle is recorded in the Saxon cave cadastre under the number 5438 EG-07.

From 1978, the dangerous exploration of the underwater areas by Zwickau divers began. The dives constantly brought new details about the expansion of the cave. A routine check of the water, soil and air samples shows a relatively high level of naturally caused radon pollution . However, it does not pose a health risk for a short visit. Cave guides must be regularly monitored by occupational medicine.

In order to meet the required safety regulations for show caves, the cave was ventilated in the 1980s . In 1989 the administration already counted 156,000 visitors. According to this, since 1990 molds and lichens have been detected in the area of the publicly accessible parts to a worrying extent. From the summer of 1990, a modified ventilation concept was implemented and visits to the cave were limited.

The Drachenhöhle has numerous interesting sintered structures. Particularly noteworthy is a 50 centimeter long sintered flag called "curtain". The hole in her is from a pistol shot by a Soviet soldier.

Ten-minute laser shows are also offered in the cave (from May to August) , and there are cave concerts for max. 50 participants, weddings can also be held in the cave on request .

The 80th anniversary of the Dragon Cave Syrau was celebrated with a cave festival from June 6th to 8th, 2008. Events were also held in 2013 on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the discovery. In December 2013 the lighting system of the cave was completely renewed; since then it has been lit exclusively with LED technology .
