The Wiehl stalactite cave is located about one kilometer south of Wiehl in the Oberbergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ) on the road from Wiehl to Nümbrecht. The corridor system is 868 m long.

history

The stalactite cave was discovered in 1860 during blasting in a quarry. Limestone formations discovered in the process went unnoticed for a long time. During the period of great unemployment, their development was carried out in 1926/27 as part of public emergency work ( job creation measures). Large parts of the cave were filled with cave clay that had to be removed. Sometimes the course of the course is still not exactly known because the sludge has not been completely removed.

Since 1997 the cave has been scientifically supervised by the Kluterthöhle working group , which carried out a new survey from January 24th to March 28th, 1998.

rock

Around the cave there is an isolated limestone nest , which is surrounded by sandstone and clay slate . Numerous fossils of corals and shells can be found in this rock , as it is a fossilized coral reef from the Devon Sea .

particularities

The Wiehl stalactite cave is equipped with electric light and guided tours are offered. The city of Wiehl holds weddings in the cave. Due to the high humidity , mosses , ferns and lichens grow in the cave .
