history
The Schretzenloch was mentioned for the first time in 1470, later it became Scherzenloch . The current name Schertelshöhle is derived from a legend. Baron von Schertel had lost his dog while hunting in the woods near Westerheim. After a long search the hunter heard a whimper in a deep hole. He and a few helpers let ourselves down on a rope and freed the dog. They discovered the cave that was named after the baron. Under the Kuhloch , an old access shaft 24 meters deep, there is a large, heavily sintered hall . The cave was first explored in 1820 by some brave fellows. In 1828/29 the Wiesensteiger notary Scheuffele financed a breakthrough as a convenient entrance tunnel. In the meantime the cave was used as a beer cellar. In 1902 it was opened as a show cave . Electric lighting was added in 1953.
description
The cave consists of two corridors on different floors. The lower corridor is like a gap and is up to 15 meters high. The upper corridor is a little lower. The two cave passages were probably created by running water. The stalagmites and the sintered jewelry are remarkable and of fairytale beauty. The guideway is 160 meters long.
