The Niedaltdorf stalactite cave is a 120 meter long primary cave (tuff cave) in the Niedaltdorf district of the municipality of Rehlingen-Siersburg ( Saarland ). The cave was formed around 8,000 years ago in a spring limestone camp 200 meters long, 40 meters wide and eight meters thick . The deposit has formed at the source of a low tributary over the past 10,000 years .
history
The cave was discovered in 1880 while excavating the construction pit for an inn. However, they paid no attention and the discovered cavity was filled in with rubble again. The cave was rediscovered in 1927 during repair work in the basement of the inn. The development work ran in two stages up to 1933. Electric light was installed and so the cave was officially opened as a show cave in 1932 . In 1933 the east corridor was connected to the west corridor by cross passage 2 to form a circular route. After visitors had repeatedly taken souvenirs from the cave, it was placed under nature protection in 1937 .
geology
The wealth of shapes of the stalactites and the encrusted plant remains inside is worth seeing . The plant inclusions are mostly twigs and larger branches, but also animal components such as snail shells. There are also quite large translucent to translucent calcite crystals in the cave .
