Achim Becker

Achim Becker (born November 21, 1931 in Hamburg ) is a former German SED functionary. From 1980 to 1989 he was chairman of the State Committee for Broadcasting in the GDR.

Life

Becker, the son of a milk merchant and a cleaner, trained as a businessman in Grevesmühlen from 1947 to 1949 after attending elementary and high school . From 1950 to 1951 he attended the technical college for broadcasting in Berlin-Grünau and then worked as an editor for the Berlin broadcasting company and the German broadcaster .

In 1952 he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and from 1953 to 1954 attended the central school of the SED in Schwerin . He then completed a distance learning course at the Karl Marx party college of the SED, which he graduated in 1962 as a social scientist.

From 1956 to 1962 he officially worked for VEB Kraftverkehr Berlin-Lichtenberg , but actually worked for the propaganda broadcaster Deutscher Freiheitsender 904 . From 1964 to 1969 he was editor and editor-in-chief at Deutschlandsender, until 1972 at the voice of the GDR . In August 1968, during the crackdown on the Prague Spring by Warsaw Pact troops , he reported for a few weeks as a special correspondent from Prague .

From 1972 to 1976 Becker acted as 1st secretary of the SED company party organization in the State Committee for Broadcasting. From 1976 to 1980 he was a full-time member of the agitation commission at the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED, responsible for journalistic issues relating to the SED's foreign policy.

From November 1980 to November 1989 he was the successor to the late Rudolf Singer, Chairman of the State Broadcasting Committee. From April 1981 (10th party congress) he was a candidate and from April 1986 (11th party congress) a member of the Central Committee of the SED . From 1982 he was a member of the board of the GDR Journalists' Association .

Achim Becker received a. a. 1970 the Gerhart Eisler plaque and 1985 the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold.

Becker has been a pensioner and member of the PDS since 1990 and of the Die Linke party since 2007 .
