The former Cistercian monastery in Haina is one of the most important Gothic monastery complexes in Hesse. Haina Monastery was built by monks from Altenberg Monastery in the Bergisches Land. In 1144 they had settled on the Aulesburg near Löhlbach and 70 years later they had moved to Haina.

The Haina Cistercians acquired rich property through donations, purchases and exchanges, from the Weser to the Main. In 1527 the monastery was closed by Landgrave Philipp von Hessen and converted into a state hospital. In the former monastery there is now a psychiatric hospital and psychiatry museum . 1789 built the headmaster of the institution, Friedrich von Stamford, the Stamford garden .
