Haina (monastery) is a municipality in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse .

Haina (monastery) is located in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district south of Frankenberg and east of the Burgwald on the southwest slope of the Kellerwald . It is located on the Wohra not far west of the Hohen Lohr .
Neighboring communities
Haina (monastery) borders in the northwest on the city of Frankenau , in the northeast on the city of Bad Wildungen (both in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district), in the east on the municipality of Bad Zwesten , in the southeast on the municipalities of Jesberg and Gilserberg (all three in the Schwalm- Eder district ), to the south to the city of Gemünden , and to the west to the municipality of Burgwald and the city of Frankenberg (all three in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district).

The community consists of twelve districts: Altenhaina with Kirschgarten , Battenhausen , Bockendorf , Dodenhausen , Haddenberg , Haina (district - seat of the municipal administration), Halgehausen , Hüttenrode , Löhlbach , Mohnhausen , Oberholzhausen and Römershausen .
history
The former Cistercian monastery in Haina is one of the most important Gothic monastery complexes in Hesse. Haina Monastery was built by monks from Altenberg Monastery in the Bergisches Land. In 1144 they had settled on the Aulesburg near Löhlbach and 70 years later they had moved to Haina.
The Haina Cistercians acquired rich property through donations, purchases and exchanges, from the Weser to the Main. In 1527 the monastery was closed by Landgrave Philipp von Hessen and converted into a state hospital. In the former monastery there is now a psychiatric hospital and psychiatry museum . 1789 built the headmaster of the institution, Friedrich von Stamford, the Stamford garden .
On November 15, 1928, the Haina Manor was dissolved and converted to the Haina rural community.
Haina State Hospital
The State Hospital Haina, formerly a Cistercian monastery, was secularized in 1527 and abolished by the letter of foundation of Landgrave Philip the Generous on August 26, 1533. It was set up as a hospital for the poor, sick, infirm, and idiots of the male sex.
Around 1863 it was under the government of Marburg and was monitored by the sovereign commissioner , government assessor Lotz. With the oversight of the business as head supervisor, the born. Rath Wilhelm Schenck zu Schweinsberg. The secretary was Friedrich Quentin, hospital and surgeon Heinrich Amelung, kitchen master Adolph Köth, inspector Ludwig Schindehütte, hospital rent master Johannes Köfe, riding forester Wilhelm Stahl (zu Löhlbach) and Georg Heinrich Möller (zu Dodenau), district forester Georg Carl von Stiernberg (to Rosenthal) and Carl Engelhard was entrusted with the supervision of hospital construction.
The following people also worked in the State Hospital: Lutheran Pastor Christian Fett (zu Haina), Reformed Pastor Julius Iffland (zu Gemünden), lecturer Julius Heinrich Gnatz (zu Haina), organist and cantor was at the same time candidate August Hamel.
Territorial reform
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipalities of Altenhaina, Bockendorf, Halgehausen and Mohnhausen were incorporated into the municipality of Haina / Kloster on July 1, 1971, and Hüttenrode and Oberholzhausen followed on the same date. On December 31, 1971, Battenhausen, Löhlbach and Römershausen were added. Dodenhausen and Haddenberg followed on July 1, 1972. Local districts with local advisory councils and local councilors were set up for all formerly independent communities . The district of Haina / Kloster was designated as the administrative seat of what is now the municipality of Haina (monastery).
